UP Police save 4,000 lives through social media suicide alerts since 2023

Lucknow: In Uttar Pradesh, policing is increasingly extending beyond crime control and law-and-order duties to include life-saving interventions and emotional support for people in distress.Uttar Pradesh Police, under Yogi Adityanath govt, has combined technology with rapid response to act on social media indicators of self-harm, reaching vulnerable individuals in time to prevent suicides.Between Jan 1, 2023, and Oct 10, 2026, UP Police said it saved more than 4,000 lives by responding to alerts linked to suicide-related posts on social media platforms. The initiative is supported by a system established in 2022 between UP Police and Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram. Under the arrangement, when Meta’s systems detect a suicide-related post on Facebook or Instagram, an alert is sent through email and phone to Social Media Centre at Police Headquarters, working under the Director General of Police. After receiving the alert, the headquarters traces the person’s location and relays details to the relevant district and local police unit for immediate action.A team is then dispatched to locate the person, ensure their safety and offer counselling and emotional support. Two recent incidents in Lucknow and Ghaziabad highlighted the speed of this mechanism. In both cases, young men posted suicide-related messages on Instagram, triggering alerts that led to swift police intervention. In Lucknow’s Saadatganj area, a 26-year-old delivery worker, distressed by a dispute involving his wife and in-laws, posted a suicide-related video. Police said personnel from Saadatganj police station reached him in about 10 minutes amid concerns he might jump into a river. He was counselled, and family members were engaged to provide support. In Ghaziabad’s Link Road police station area, a 24-year-old man facing financial stress posted a suicide-related message.Police reached his home in eight minutes and found a noose in the room, preventing harm.He told police he was under pressure due to household expenses and was counselled. The initiative has received the SKOCH Award 2025 and The Economic Times GovTech Awards 2026.
