Lucknow: UP govt has drafted a state-specific plan to use microbiome technology for monitoring hospital infections, improving wastewater treatment and enhancing crop quality, with pilot projects proposed at selected institutions. While some microbiomes cause disease, others support digestion, soil fertility and the breakdown of organic waste.CEO of Uttar Pradesh Promote Pharma Council (UPPPC) Kritika Sharma said: “The draft, titled Uttar Pradesh State Specific Note on Microbiome Technologies, seeks to apply technology across healthcare, environmental protection, sanitation, food safety and sustainable agriculture. It will be submitted to chief minister Yogi Adityanath for approval.”The science and technology department will coordinate with departments of health, agriculture, horticulture, urban development, water and sanitation and pollution control, with Biotechnology Park in Lucknow and UPPPC playing key roles. The proposed rollout will be phased over 24 months. Subject expert Dr GN Singh has recommended using a network of govt and selected private hospitals to strengthen surveillance of infections and antimicrobial resistance.Conventional laboratory tests, targeted genetic testing and DNA sequencing could help identify infection sources and mechanisms through which microorganisms develop resistance to medicines. For environmental applications, the draft proposes treatment-based pilot projects in the catchment areas of Ganga, Yamuna and Gomti. These would assess microbial communities in existing wastewater treatment plants and explore improvements in biological treatment by addressing factors such as aeration, nutrient balance and the entry of toxic substances.
