LUCKNOW: A 23-year-old woman was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room at her matrimonial home in Marhamat Nagar locality of Mahmudabad in Sitapur district on Thursday evening. The deceased, identified as Prachi Tiwari, had injury marks on her body, while her family has accused her husband and other in-laws of killing her over dowry demands.Police have registered an FIR against eight people following a complaint lodged by Prachi’s father, Anil Kumar Tiwari, who alleged that his daughter had been subjected to persistent physical and mental harassment since her marriage. The police said further legal action was underway.According to the complaint, Anil Kumar Tiwari, a resident of Deva Ukhri, had married Prachi to Kamal Mishra, a resident of Marhamat Nagar in Mahmudabad, on February 13, 2025.The complainant alleged that soon after the marriage, Prachi began facing harassment at her matrimonial home. Her in-laws allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh in cash along with additional dowry and subjected her to physical and mental torture over the unfulfilled demands. The situation came to light on Thursday evening when Prachi was found hanging from a ceiling fan inside a room at the house. However, when her parents and other members of her maternal family reached the spot, they found her body lying in the veranda outside the house, according to the complaint. The presence of injury marks on Prachi’s body further intensified the family’s suspicions, prompting them to approach the police and accuse her in-laws of being responsible for her death. Her father alleged that the dowry-related harassment was linked to the circumstances in which his daughter died.In his complaint, Anil named Prachi’s husband, Kamal Mishra; father-in-law, Vishun; mother-in-law, Poonam; sister-in-law, Uma, a resident of Gopalpur Bhattha in Sidhauli; brother-in-law, Vasu alias Ramji; Anurag Yadav; and two other people. An FIR was registered against all eight accused on the basis of the complaint. The police are investigating the circumstances surrounding Prachi’s death, including the allegations of dowry harassment and the injury marks reportedly found on her body. The sequence of events leading to her death and the circumstances in which the body was moved from the room to the veranda are also relevant to establishing what happened at the house.Circle officer Kapoor Kumar confirmed that an FIR had been registered and said further action was being taken in accordance with the law.The allegations against the accused are yet to be established through the investigation. Further details about the post-mortem examination and any subsequent police action were not available in the initial report.
