NHAI approves underpass, flyover to ease Shankar Chowk traffic
The flyover will be a roughly 1.3km-long, six-lane structure along the service road from the Ambience Mall side towards Cyber City

Gurgaon: National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved a right-turn underpass below Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway and a unidirectional flyover to ease congestion near Shankar Chowk and Cyber City. DLF will build both at its own cost, estimated at Rs 300 crore. The underpass will connect from Moulsari Avenue rapid metro station to NH-8 near HIL land. The flyover will run from U-turn underpass near Ambience Mall to Cyber City.“We have issued in-principle approval to DLF for construction of the proposed flyover along the service road of NH-8 and the right-turn underpass from Moulsari Avenue Road to NH-8 for traffic decongestion from Sirhaul toll to Shankar Chowk in Gurgaon,” an NHAI official said. The approval was issued on Oct 1. GMDA gave its nod for both structures last month. The underpass will be around 600 metres long and three lanes wide. It will let vehicles from DLF-3 heading to Delhi take a right turn without using the existing U-turn flyover near Cyber City. Vehicles from Moulsari Avenue Road will join NH-8 before the existing U-turn underpass near Ambience Mall.At present, DLF-3 traffic bound for Delhi uses the U-turn facility near Cyber City and converges at Shankar Chowk with vehicles from Udyog Vihar, Golf Course Road, IFFCO Chowk and other areas, putting pressure on the junction. The underpass will segregate the DLF-3 traffic and give it a direct route towards Delhi. The flyover will be a roughly 1.3km-long, six-lane structure along the service road from the Ambience Mall side towards Cyber City. It will have ramps for traffic exiting the existing U-turn underpass and for vehicles heading to Moulsari Avenue Road. It is meant to serve traffic headed to Cyber City, Udyog Vihar, Sikanderpur and DLF Phase 3, and to provide an alternative route for traffic generated by Ambience Mall and DLF’s Downtown development. Both projects are part of DLF’s decongestion plan for the NH-8 service road between Sirhaul toll plaza and Shankar Chowk. The proposal was submitted after a meeting chaired by NHAI chairman in Oct last year.DLF proposed them as capacity-augmentation measures, citing existing congestion on the service road and the expected rise in traffic from its 35-acre Downtown development. Phase 1 of Downtown, with three office buildings, is complete. Phase 2, comprising a retail mall and four office buildings, is under construction. The completed development is expected to generate a combined footfall of around 1.5 lakh people. The company says the present four-lane service road, which widens to six lanes at some points, will not be able to handle this on top of existing traffic.NHAI has directed DLF to ensure adequate safety measures during construction. These include trained traffic marshals, flagmen and a dedicated safety officer throughout the work. DLF must also install and maintain retro-reflective signs, delineators, cones, blinkers, hazard markers, crash barriers and other approved traffic-control devices.
