New Delhi: Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Monday staged a protest and marched towards the Congress office, demanding action against Congress MP and Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, who has been accused of sexual harassment.Leading the protest, BJP Mahila Morcha national president Roop Kumari Choudhary said, “We strongly condemn the exploitation of students under the pretext of awarding marks by a Congress MP. Congress must immediately expel this MP from the party because the daughters of our country are demanding justice.”“We want to ask Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi…Why are you silent? Your silence suggests that you are encouraging such acts and shielding those accused in serious cases of sexual exploitation,” she said.Chief minister Rekha Gupta also weighed in on the controversy, posting on X: “Serious allegations of sexual harassment were made against Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam by 11 female students of JNU. JNU dismissed him, and police registered an FIR. But Congress remained silent! When women reached the Congress headquarters to question this silence, Rahul Gandhi’s people assaulted and verbally abused them.”West Delhi MP Kamaljeet Sehrawat alleged that an inquiry committee had found professor Akoijam guilty and that he had subsequently been removed from the university. Despite this, she said, he continued to be a Congress MP.“Girls from across India come to the university to receive quality education and build a bright future. They regard their teachers as mentors and expect respect, safety and proper guidance from them. In such circumstances, serious allegations of harassment against a teacher, followed by an adverse finding by an inquiry committee, constitute a matter that brings shame upon the entire country,” she said.“We demand that Rahul Gandhi apologise…Our demand is not driven by political gain; it is aimed at securing justice for the affected students, protecting women’s dignity and ensuring a safe environment in educational institutions,” she added.New Delhi MP Bansuri Swaraj said it was “astonishing” that the Congress leadership had remained silent on the allegations. The protest came after JNU terminated Akoijam’s services following an inquiry into allegations of sexual harassment involving female students.Earlier Monday, Delhi Police registered an FIR against him at Vasant Kunj North police station following a complaint filed by the university’s chief security officer on Oct 11.Congress did not respond to the allegations.
