NEW DELHI: With CJP leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka in Tihar Jail, party founder Abhijeet Dipke on Wednesday called for a ‘Tricolour march’ at Delhi’s Connaught Place on Friday, challenging the police action against the activists. In a video posted on X, Dipke asked people to assemble at Central Park in Connaught Place at 5pm on October 16, carrying the national flag. He also urged people in other cities to organise similar marches, framing the call as a protest against the arrests of Das and Ranka.“Waving a Tiranga is not a crime,” Dipke said, referring to the two leaders’ arrest after they allegedly entered Jantar Mantar, which was recently denotified as a designated protest site.Dipke also said he expected he could face arrest for issuing the call, but insisted he would not be deterred. “My Tiranga is my pride and I will wave it,” he said.
Das, Ranka sent to judicial custody
Das and Ranka were sent to five days of judicial custody on Wednesday and lodged in Tihar Jail. They were arrested along with CJP activist Ajinkya Shinde after allegedly entering Jantar Mantar and raising slogans demanding chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.Police booked them on charges including trespassing, violation of prohibitory orders, breach of a peace bond and obstructing a public servant from discharging official duties. The two had signed a bond to maintain peace for a year after being detained during an earlier protest, officials said.CJP’s legal team head Ratna Singh alleged that the activists were denied access to lawyers and questioned the grounds for their detention. Advocate Abhisht Hela, who represents the leaders, accused police of making false claims in court. The arrests came amid the CJP’s agitation against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
