Jaipur: Over 2.4 lakh voters were added to the state’s electoral rolls between Oct 1 and Oct 20 under the Election Commission of India-mandated special voter registration campaign aimed at enrolling first-time voters as well as eligible citizens left out during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).The addition of 2,40,534 names to the electoral rolls came from 7,78,147 Form-6 applications received during the period.A total of 31.3 lakh voters among Rajasthan’s 5.1 crore-strong electorate were deleted during the SIR process completed earlier this year. The special voter registration campaign, which involves BLOs making door-to-door visits to enlist new voters and re-add those left out, will continue till Oct 31. New and eligible voters can continue to apply to enrol as voters once the special campaign concludes.Speaking to TOI, chief electoral officer Naveen Mahajan said the campaign covered two broad groups — first-time voters in the 18–19-year age group and eligible citizens aged 20 years and above whose names were not on the rolls. In the 18–19 years category, 4,30,701 applications were received, of which 1,39,972 names were added to the rolls. Another 3,47,446 applications were received from citizens aged 20 years and above, of which 1,00,562 were added to the rolls.Officials said the addition of voters aged 20 years and above showed that the campaign was helping bring back eligible citizens who had been left out during the SIR exercise.Several districts recorded strong progress in processing applications from first-time voters. Bundi, Bharatpur, Dholpur, Karauli, Alwar, Tonk, Balotra, Churu, Kotputli-Behror and Sawai Madhopur were among the leading districts by percentage of applications processed in this category.
