Ghaziabad: The conviction percentage in the district has gone up by 43% since last year, with courts sentencing 584 criminals between Jan and Aug, compared with 408 in the same period in 2025.Of these, 27 were sentenced to life imprisonment, 10 to 20 years, 11 to 10 years or more and 19 to five to nine years’ jail terms. The remaining 517 accused received sentences of less than five years. In 2025, 408 accused were convicted. Of these, 21 were sentenced to life imprisonment, eight to 20 years, 10 to 10 years or more, 13 to five to nine years and 356 to less than five years.Police officers said the conviction cell has achieved this success through effective advocacy, strong evidence and coordination with the prosecution. Police Commissioner J. Ravinder Gaud said the cell was set up on July 1 last year to strengthen crime control and the judicial process. Its objective is to ensure early punishment for the guilty through swift action, impartial investigation, strong evidence collection and effective prosecution in serious and cognisable crimes. It monitors cases related to murder, attempt to murder, dowry murder, rape, POCSO, kidnapping, robbery, dacoity, theft, Gangster Act, NDPS and the Excise Act.The commissioner said the cell reviews old and pending cases and sets priorities. Regular meetings are held with prosecution officers to monitor the progress of cases. Emphasis is laid on ensuring the timely presence of witnesses and presenting irrefutable evidence in court. A digital evidence management system has improved the quality of evidence presentation. According to the police, this has strengthened the prosecution’s case.In a case registered at Masuri police station under the Dowry Act and for murder, Gulshan, a resident of village Sherpur Khichra, was convicted of murder. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 10,000. He was also punished under Section 498A with three years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 2,000.Meanwhile, in a murder and Arms Act case at Sihani Gate police station, the court sentenced Dinesh Diwakar, a resident of Rakesh Marg, to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 20,000. Under the Arms Act, he was awarded two years of imprisonment and fined Rs 2,000, and under Section 27, three years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 3,000 were imposed.
