Prepare lists of criminals, act on sensitive social media cases in 2 hrs: CM

Patna: Chief minister Samrat Choudhary on Friday directed police to prepare district- and police station-wise lists of criminals, step up surveillance of habitual offenders and ensure a response within two hours in sensitive cases involving social media as part of a statewide push to strengthen law and order.Choudhary issued the directions while chairing a high-level review meeting at the ‘Sankalp’ auditorium in Lok Sevak Awas. Deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary was also present.The CM said maintenance of law and order was among the state govt’s highest priorities and asked the police administration to become more active, accountable and technology-driven. He directed officials to act against criminals and anti-social elements in accordance with the law and use provisions of the Crime Control Act wherever required.He also stressed speedy investigation of criminal cases and stronger prosecution to ensure timely punishment of offenders.On cybercrime, Choudhary directed officials to strengthen monitoring mechanisms in every district and widely publicise the cybercrime helpline number 1930. He also called for action, as per law, against misleading, objectionable or sensitive content circulated on social media.In sensitive social-media-related cases, the district magistrate and superintendent of police should respond within two hours, he said, adding that such cases should also be monitored at the headquarters level.The CM directed officials to prepare an action plan to curb the illegal trade in narcotic substances. After being briefed on measures being taken under the de-addiction campaign, he called for strict action against those involved in the narcotics trade and better coordination among agencies.Reviewing economic offences, Choudhary asked officials to take action against those acquiring property or financial gains through illegal means and ensure effective investigation and prosecution.He also directed officials to provide better facilities and a suitable working environment for women police personnel. Police were asked to closely monitor elements creating unrest in public places and take action, in accordance with the law, where obscene or double-meaning songs posed a law-and-order problem.Choudhary said negligence in law-and-order matters would not be tolerated and asked officials to discharge their duties with accountability. He also called for strict measures to keep competitive examinations free from malpractice.Officials were directed to identify areas vulnerable to crime or unrest and ensure regular patrolling, continuous monitoring and adequate police presence. The CM also called for reorganising district anti-riot squads and further strengthening and modernising the Special Task Force.
