Jaipur: Former chief minister Ashok Gehlot Saturday accused BJP national president Nitin Nabin of “becoming Election Commission’s lawyer”.He also alleged that BJP was trying to portray opposition protests as a conspiracy to destabilise the country. In a post on X, Gehlot said, “Those who are afraid of questions are now being forced to become the Election Commission’s lawyer.”He was referring to Nabin’s media interview earlier in the day targeting Congress, Rahul Gandhi and CJP for being hand in glove with foreign powers to destabilise the country. He accused BJP and RSS of not believing in democratic values and questioned BJP’s argument that the Opposition’s protests were backed by “foreign forces”. “When the BJP was in Opposition and took to the streets, which foreign force was behind it? And which foreign force is behind it today?” he said.Gehlot also defended Rahul, referring to his Bharat Jodo Yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir. “A person who talks about uniting the country is being targeted for raising questions. This is shameful,” he said.Gehlot alleged that opposition MPs had been prevented from raising issues in Parliament and later stopped from going to EC and Jantar Mantar. He also questioned restrictions imposed in Delhi, including disruption of transport and internet services, citing them as evidence of govt’s response to protests.“In a democracy, asking questions and protesting are the Opposition’s rights, not crimes,” Gehlot said.He accused the Centre of deflecting attention from domestic questions by using terms such as “urban Naxals” and “foreign forces” against the opposition.Gehlot further attacked govt over US President Donald Trump’s statements on tariffs and visa policies, alleging that the Centre was under pressure from foreign powers.
