New Delhi: Barricades narrowed entry lanes, police scanned vehicles and queues stretched towards Delhi Friday as the city administration stepped up security at the borders ahead of Saturday’s proposed protest at Jantar Mantar for the removal of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. From Chilla and Ghazipur to Singhu and Tikri, the preparations were visible at key entry points. At east Delhi’s Chilla border, a long queue of vehicles stretched towards the entry point from Noida, with commuters inching forward amid heightened security checks. Barricades funnelled traffic through narrower passages, while large police vans stood nearby. Central armed police personnel were also deployed, lending the crossing the look of a security checkpoint rather than a routine entry into the capital. At Ghazipur, central armed police personnel stood in a line, keeping a close watch on passersby and monitoring the movement of vehicles. Barricades were placed across the stretch, even in the middle of the road, narrowing the carriageway. As vehicles navigated the restricted space, security personnel maintained vigil.Further north, Singhu border, which connects Delhi with Haryana, was divided into three lanes using barricades to create separate passages for vehicles. At least seven police personnel were stationed along the stretch, scanning vehicles and monitoring movement. More barricades lay stacked nearby, ready to be brought into use if required. At Tikri border with Haryana, too, barricades were in place, though vehicle checks appeared less stringent. Vehicle checking was also underway in Ghaziabad and Ayanagar, extending the security watch across all major approaches to Delhi. The borders to Delhi are crucial routes for thousands of people who travel daily from Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurgaon and beyond for work, education, business and medical needs. They also carry commercial goods vehicles into the city.
