Gaya: Scientists from Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, who carried out a routine inspection of the Bodhi tree on the Mahabodhi Mahavihara campus in Bodh Gaya on Monday, declared the sacred tree to be in excellent health.During the inspection, FRI scientists Santan Barthwal and Shailesh Pandey conducted a detailed assessment of the tree. Barthwal said no signs of infection or disease were found on its leaves and that there were no major health concerns. To ensure the tree’s continued well-being, the scientists recommended minor maintenance measures, including pruning dead branches and applying an organic insecticide spray as part of routine preventive care.Mahavihara chief monk Bhikkhu Chalinda and caretaker monk Bhikkhu Deenanand were present during the assessment. Under an MoU signed with FRI Dehradun, Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) conducts regular monitoring, maintenance and long-term conservation of the tree to ensure its ecological stability. The Bodhi tree holds immense spiritual significance for Buddhists worldwide as Prince Siddhartha is believed to have attained enlightenment while meditating under it more than 2,600 years ago.According to the winter 2026-27 spiritual calendar released by BTMC, the Mahavihara campus is expected to witness a large influx of devotees during the annual World Peace Puja ceremonies under the sacred tree this winter.
