Ghaziabad to close 10 illegal cuts, add U-turns
Unauthorised cuts in road dividers often encourage risky crossings

Ghaziabad: PWD and Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation will close illegal median cuts and add U-turns on at least 10 busy stretches to ease traffic, including Meerut Road, Hapur Road, Indirapuram, Vaishali, trans-Hindon areas, Loni, Vasundhara and Muradnagar. Zebra crossings are also planned near the Vivekanand Nagar flyover and on Ambedkar Road. Of the two proposed U-turns, one will come up near the Jaipuria trisection opposite Sahibabad police station. The initiative follows directions issued by district magistrate Ravindra Kumar Mandar during a recent road safety committee meeting. He instructed the departments to strengthen road safety arrangements, particularly on busy stretches. The need for these measures has increased with the rapid growth in the number of vehicles in the district. Around 10 lakh vehicles are currently registered, besides thousands of vehicles entering from neighbouring districts and other states. Unauthorised openings in road dividers often encourage risky crossings, increasing the possibility of accidents and traffic congestion.Earlier, similar safety improvements were introduced on nearly 15 roads in the district. The upcoming phase will extend these measures to more locations, with a focus on pedestrian safety and better traffic management.“Road improvement work is under way in the urban area, from repairing dividers to creating zebra crossings. Two U-turns are proposed,” PWD executive engineer Ramraja said.NK Chaudhary, chief engineer of the Municipal Corporation, said that similar safety measures would also be implemented on other roads to improve convenience and safety for commuters.
