HC calls social welfare secy on quota row

Ritika Singh Sisodiya/TNNLucknow: The Allahabad HC’s Lucknow bench on Monday expressed displeasure over the UP govt’s stand on granting admissions to Scheduled Caste candidates beyond the prescribed reservation limit in four medical colleges. The court has summoned additional chief secretary/principal secretary of the social welfare department along with relevant records on Tuesday. A division bench of Justice Rajan Roy and Justice Manjive Shukla passed the order while hearing a special appeal filed by govt. The court observed that the state had given an undertaking last year that the provisions of the UP Admission to Educational Institutions (Reservation for Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes) Act, 2006, would be followed in the four medical colleges — Ambedker Nagar, Kannoj, Saharanpur and Jalaun – – from the 2026-27 academic session. However, it appeared that admissions were again being granted by exceeding the prescribed reservation limits.Under the 2006 Act, reservation is fixed at 21% for Scheduled Castes, 2% for Scheduled Tribes and 27% for Other Backward Classes, taking the total to 50%.The bench observed that govt could not justify non-compliance with judicial orders. The matter will be heard on Oct 13.
