NSUI functionaries detained during Jamia protest get bail

New Delhi: NSUI functionaries Zeeshan Ahmad and Faizan Ali Khan, who were granted bail on Oct 29, were released Saturday after spending three days in judicial custody at Tihar Jail. They were granted bail on the condition that they “maintain peace” and furnish a surety of Rs 5,000 each.During the protest at Jamia Millia Islamia over its students’ union, Delhi Police had initiated preventive action against them on Oct 28 under sections 126 and 170 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, which deal with preventing breaches of peace and apprehending persons likely to commit cognisable offences. Their release was delayed due to pending formalities, including “surety verification”.Advocate Saimon Farooqui opposed their continued custody for surety verification, arguing that they should be released on “personal bonds” instead.Police alleged that the two were trying to “provoke passersby” and “gather a crowd” outside gate no. 4 of Jamia by raising slogans in support of the students’ union. Their actions, police claimed, could disturb public peace.
