Ara: In an attempt to send a strong message to criminals and reassure residents, Bhojpur police on Thursday paraded three accused in the Ram Kumar Singh murder case about 1.6km from Ara-Nawada police station to the Ara Civil Court under heavy escort. Retired customs officer Singh was shot dead near his house on Oct 15.“This is a warning and a strong message to criminals that ‘bure kaam ka bura natija hota hai’ (evil deeds have bad consequences),” Ara-Nawada SHO Kumar Rajnikant told the media as the accused were being taken to court. The unusual sight drew a large number of onlookers along the route. An elderly resident of Karman Tola said such a “criminal parade” was being seen in Ara after nearly two decades and that the move would help strengthen public confidence in law enforcement. The three, including one of the main accused, Chandan Singh, were arrested from Kolkata airport on Wednesday in a joint operation by the Bihar STF and Bhojpur police. Police sources said raids were continuing to arrest three alleged hired shooters and other accused named in the case.Police suspect that a dispute over 14 katthas of land at Singahi village under the Ara Mufassil police station area was behind the officer’s killing. The land is worth more than Rs 5 crore.
