Lucknow: With prison reforms, inmate rehabilitation and modern jail management emerging as key priorities, the UP prison administration and reform services on Monday launched a three-day national-level training programme on “Best practices in prison administration” at the prison headquarters here. The programme, sponsored by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPR&D) under the Union ministry of home affairs, has brought together prison officials from UP, MP and Haryana to deliberate on innovative correctional practices, security management and inmate welfare initiatives being implemented across various states.Inaugurating the programme, UP director general of prison administration and reform services PC Meena stressed that prisons should be viewed not merely as secure detention centres but as institutions for correction, reformation and rehabilitation. He said effective prison administration requires a balanced approach that combines security with opportunities for inmates to reintegrate into society.Officials said the three-day workshop will serve as a platform for cross-state knowledge sharing, enabling prison officers to study successful models and reforms adopted in states such as Telangana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The discussions are expected to focus on modern prison management techniques, correctional programmes, inmate rehabilitation strategies and innovative administrative practices.“Learning from successful initiatives across the country and adapting them to local needs is essential for improving prison administration,” Meena said, adding that such programmes provide officers an opportunity to exchange experiences and identify practical solutions to operational challenges. The training programme, organised by the prison department’s training wing, will feature expert lectures, panel discussions and interactive sessions designed to strengthen professional capacity and promote reform-oriented governance within prisons.
