Jaisalmer: Farmers from Jaisalmer’s canal command area continued their indefinite protest at Zero RD for the third day on Monday, demanding their share of irrigation water from the Indira Gandhi Canal Project. They alleged that Jaisalmer’s entitlement of around 1,800 cusecs was not being supplied, leaving tail-end areas dry and standing crops at risk. The agitation, earlier suspended after written and verbal assurances from canal officials, resumed after farmers said there was no improvement on the ground. Protesters accused the canal department, district administration and local political leadership of failing to protect the district’s water share. A mahapanchayat warned of intensified agitation, including road blockades and larger protests, if adequate water is not released soon.Hundreds of farmers are currently participating in the protest. They said the agitation would continue until adequate irrigation water was ensured to save their standing crops.
