Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh has crossed nine lakh rooftop solar installations under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, adding over 3,000 megawatts (MW) of solar power capacity, officials said on Thursday.According to Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Development Agency (UPNEDA), the state is adding around 9 to 10 MW of domestic rooftop solar capacity daily, bringing its installation pace close to Australia’s average of 10.4 MW per day recorded during the first half of 2026.UPNEDA director Ravinder Singh said the programme has generated over one lakh direct employment opportunities through a network of more than 9,500 registered vendors engaged in installation, equipment supply, transportation and maintenance.Under the scheme, eligible households can receive combined Central and state subsidies of up to Rs 1.08 lakh for installing rooftop solar systems. Applications can be submitted until March 31, 2027.Officials estimated that the installed capacity of 3,000 MW could generate around 1.35 crore units of electricity daily, assuming an average generation of 4.5 units per kilowatt. At an indicative tariff of Rs 6.50 per unit, this translates into electricity worth approximately Rs 8.78 crore daily or Rs 3,202 crore annually. However, actual generation and savings will depend on weather conditions, system efficiency and applicable tariffs.
