How to grow crunchy carrots at home: 5 simple steps for your kitchen garden

Carrots like steady moisture, roughly an inch of water a week, rather than a flood after a dry spell, which can make the roots split. Pots dry out faster, so check them often. If the tops of the carrots peep out of the soil, cover them with a little more soil, to stop the shoulders from turning green. Most carrots are ready in about 60 to 90 days. Brush back the soil to check the size, and then loosen the soil gently and pull.

Once you’ve grown your own, you might never look at supermarket carrots the same way again. A little care with the soil and a bit of patience is all it takes to get that satisfying crunch.
