LU executive council clears PhD reforms, thesis colour coding

Lucknow: Lucknow University’s executive council on Thursday cleared a set of student-focused measures spanning PhD reforms, supervision rules, admissions benefits and upgrades to academic and residential support systems.To streamline documentation and verification of doctoral work in line with a University Grants Commission order, the council approved faculty-wise colour coding for PhD thesis bindings.Blue will be used for Management, Commerce, Education, Science and Engineering. Maroon will apply to Arts, Fine Arts, Law and the Abhinavagupta Institute. Forest green will cover Agriculture, Yoga and Alternative Medicine, Ayurveda and Unani.The council also approved a five-step standard operating procedure for scholars seeking conversion from regular to part-time PhD. Under the process, a scholar will submit a formal application with supporting documents to the head of the department. The department will place it before the departmental research committee, which will evaluate and, if found suitable, recommend the request. The proposal will then be sent to the vice-chancellor for approval. After approval, the registrar will issue a no-objection certificate, and the scholar will deposit the prescribed fee for the relevant academic session.In another decision, teachers from govt and aided affiliated degree colleges were permitted to supervise part-time PhD scholars. The council also approved a 5% reservation in PhD admissions for wards of affiliated college teachers, following a demand raised by LUCTA.The executive council sanctioned 17 new self-financed teaching posts for the five-year LLB programme under the Faculty of Law.University spokesperson Mukul Srivastava said the newly constructed sports complex will be named Prof DP Singh Krida Bhawan after former vice-chancellor Prof DP Singh. He added that remuneration for contractual staff in self-financed courses was revised, raising third-category pay from Rs 14,000 to Rs 21,700 and fourth-category pay from Rs 11,650 to Rs 18,000, benefiting about 94 employees.
