New Delhi: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of complaints filed by three journalists alleging misconduct by Delhi Police during a protest at Jantar Mantar and has sought a detailed report from the Delhi Police commissioner within two weeks.“The commission has observed that the contents of the news report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights,” NHRC said in a statement.The complaints relate to alleged incidents during a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. According to a media report on Oct 5, New Delhi District Police had received complaints regarding the alleged incidents, which were subsequently transferred to Crime Branch for inquiry.Deputy commissioner of police (New Delhi) Neha Yadav had said, “Around 6 pm on Oct 4, three women, who identified themselves as journalists, lodged a complaint alleging manhandling by Delhi Police officers and staff during their detention on Oct 3.”“Their complaint has been registered, medical examinations have been conducted, and the matter has been referred to the Crime Branch,” Yadav said.The allegations later triggered protests outside Parliament Street police station, where demonstrators gathered over the alleged misconduct involving the women journalists.
