Patna: In a major push to strengthen women’s safety in public spaces, Bihar Police’s special all-women initiative, Police Didi, has taken action against 790 alleged eve-teasers and registered 21 cases across the state within a month of its operational rollout. The initiative, designed to protect women and girls from harassment, stalking and other forms of intimidation, is expanding its presence around educational institutions, coaching centres, women’s hostels and other vulnerable public places. The special teams, also referred to in the police department’s earlier nomenclature as the Abhaya Brigade, were formally notified in July 2026. Their initial performance figures for August indicate a focus on preventive policing and swift action against harassment in public spaces, a Bihar Police Headquarters (PHQ) statement said on Sunday. To provide more strength to this special team, chief minister Samrat Choudhary distributed 1,000 scooters on Aug 26. At present, a proposal for 1,500 more scooters has been prepared. The PHQ statement said, “Keeping in mind the safety of women across the state, 1,040 teams have been formed at the police station level. There is a possibility of an increase in their number in the coming time.”On the occasion of the 80th anniversary of Independence Day this year, from July 21 to Aug 10, a special campaign ‘Operation Vidhi Palak Yuvak’ was launched in all educational institutions, coaching institutes or hostels of the state. The objective was to make students aware and sensitive towards the legal provisions and punishments mentioned in the law related to crimes like eve-teasing, indecent comments, molestation, rape or stalking of women or girls.Under this, Police Didi teams conducted campaigns in 2,694 institutions, including 2,113 schools, 67 colleges and 514 other places (hostels, haats, markets, chowks, railway stations, etc.) and made 2,79,941 students and others aware. In this too, the role of Police Didi was very important.
