Lucknow: A theatrical adaptation of Bankim Chandra Chatterjee’s timeless literary work Anandmath was staged at Bhartendu Natya Akademi on Sunday. It took the audience on a journey through India’s cultural heritage, national consciousness and the spirit of sacrifice.Adapted by Praveen Kumar Sharma and directed by Shubhdeep Raha, the play explored themes of devotion to the motherland, collective strength, discipline and the aspiration for national renaissance. Set against the backdrop of the devastating famine and political turmoil in 18th-century Bengal, the production portrayed a society grappling with adversity while witnessing the emergence of a powerful yearning for independence, self-respect and renewal.Through its dramatic narrative, Anandmath highlighted the importance of unity, self-reliance and collective resolve in protecting the motherland and preserving its cultural legacy. The presentation sought to connect contemporary audiences with their civilisational roots while underlining the values of patriotism and sacrifice. The production made effective use of stage props, lighting, sound effects and music to enhance the theatrical experience. Carefully designed visual elements and the collective energy of the performers helped bring the historical setting and emotional intensity of the story to life.“The play was conceived as more than a retelling of a historical narrative. It aimed to present theatre as a medium for cultural expression and consciousness, drawing a connection between the inspiration of the past and the responsibilities of the present,” said director Shubhdeep Raha.
